Transportation La Palma
Location
The Canary Archipelago ("Islas Canarias" in Spanish) is situated 150 km West of the African coast and 1,350 km South of the Iberian Peninsula (Spain) and Europe.
The flight travel time is two hours and a half flight of Madrid, about four hours from the central Europe and minimum six hours of North America.
Coming by Airplane
The small
airport of La Palma (code "SPC") is situated in Breña Baja village, only 5 km of Santa Cruz de La Palma and 2 km of the Los Cancajos tourist area.
It opperates about 50 flights daily and about one million passengers anually.
The airport counts with a tourist information bureau, cashier, telephone service, police station, cafe bars, restaurants, pharmacy and a few store free of taxes,
besides a gas station in its immediate vecinity.
WARNING: do not confuse La Palma (code SPC) with Gran Canaria or Palma de Mallorca!

Two national and six international companies operate flights from Europe directly to La Palma.

Canary Inter-Island Air Companies
Two local companies Binter Canarias and
Canary Fly operate daily flights to/from La Palma (code SPC) via
Tenerife North (code TFN, on a hourly basis), Gran Canaria (code LPA, few direct daily flights) or other islands.
Since Oct 2017 Air Europa started to operate between the Canary islands.
A round trip Tenerife - La Palma fare starts from about 40 Euro.
Coming by Boat
The harbour of Santa Cruz of La Palma is connected with all major islands of Canary Archipelago: Tenerife (two harbours:
South - Los Cristianos and North - Santa Cruz de Tenerife), La Gomera (San Sebastian), Gran Canaria (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria),
Fuerteventura (Puerto del Rosario) and Lanzarote (Arrecife). There are two companies opperating daily these links:
Naviera Armas and
Fred Olsen.
Trasmediterranea operates a weekly link with the Spanish pensinsula,
namely the harbour of Cadiz (South of Spain). All companies admit both passengers and cargo (including vehicles). The duration of the journeys is around three
hours between Tenerife and La Palma and the two and half days from Cadiz.

How to move in La Palma
In La Palma, buses, taxi and car rental are the usual way of transportation.

The fare trip airport - Cancajos: 7 Euro
The fare trip airport - Santa Cruz: 10 Euro
Buses connect the airport with Santa Cruz of La Palma and Cancajos main tourist area, which are very closed to each other (5-10 min by taxi or bus) and the bus frequency
is 30 min (weekdays) or 60 min (weekends and legal holidays). Buses frequency across the island is more rarely (timetable here).
The bus fare trip per person is 1.30 Euro (airport - Cancajos - Santa Cruz).
For groups, two bus companies, Transportes Insular de La Palma
and Palmaguagua offer several alternatives to know the Island of La Palma:
excursions in autobus to any place of the island and guided visits around the island.
Rental cars is the best option for families, being quite cheap and the best to learn the island (traffic is very quiet here).
Fare per coach start from around 25 Euro/day, including insurance.
